Hawks Compile .500 Record in Campbell's First Season
The College of Southern Maryland Hawks men's lacrosse team wrapped up their 2018-19 season on April 13 with a 21-7 loss to Anne Arundel Community College.
Sophomore midfielder Ryan Purcell led the Hawks with three goals and added one assist. Freshman midfielder Will Meadows provided two goals and one assist as well.
CSM only trailed 7-3 after the first quarter and 10-5 at halftime, but Anne Arundel poured it on fast in the third quarter to go up 16-6.
Even though the score of this game didn't end how head coach Steve Campbell would have liked, he said "We're not the same team we were September 25 when we got together for fall ball. There's always room for improvement, but we're 100 percent better than we were back in September. We still have a long way to go."
This was the last game for Purcell and fellow sophomore Drew Hyland as Hawks, but Campbell said he already has some schools that are interested in having them come join their program.
"They can certainly play at the next level," Campbell said of his departing sophomores. "They provided the leadership. Drew's a little bit more vocal, Ryan's a little more quiet, on-the-field-type leadership. They were good examples. I was very lucky to have them, so I'd count that as a blessing."
Purcell and Hyland finished the season No. 1 and No. 2 on the team in points, respectively. Purcell scored 12 goals and contributed 17 assists, while Hyland tallied 13 goals and 13 assists.
The Hawks, playing at the club level, finished the season with a 4-4 record.
