CSM Hosts First Men’s Lacrosse Prospect Day

The College of Southern Maryland's men's lacrosse team hosted their first prospect day on July 27. 

Thirty three participants and their families showed up to learn more about the college and take part in drills and scrimmages. 

The day began with an information session from CSM admission staff to introduce families to the school's admission process, advising, and financial aid. CSM head coach Stephen Campbell also brought in an NCAA Division III coach from Averett University to come and talk about the recruiting process to players and their families. 

After a lunch break, athletes put on their gear to get ready to go through drills.

Campbell and some student-athletes from last year's team led the rest of the players through a typical pre-game stretch and warm-up session that the Hawks go through before every game. Campbell wanted to provide the prospects with an example of what their routine would be if they were to come play at CSM. 

Players were then broken up into groups to go through drills based on their position. After those agility drills were done, Campbell had everyone go through a progression drill where players start 1-v-1 with a goalie and eventually build up to 5-v-4, alternating between adding a defender and an attacking player. Four goalies showed up to this prospect day, and Campbell had a goalie coach, Jack Manley, come work with them. 

For the rest of the day, players scrimmaged. For the first scrimmage, players selected the teams, but as the scrimmages went on, players joined other teams so coaches could get a sense of who played well with who and where their strengths are on the field. 

Players from the 2019, 2020, and 2021 classes, as well as some transfer student-athletes, showed up to participate in this prospect day. There were prospects from Charles County, Calvert County, Prince George's County, and even New York City. 

Many parents said they were appreciative of the academic information session. Some other parents were so impressed by the event that they told Campbell they would have allowed their student-athlete to sign their letter of intent to CSM that day if they wished to do so. 

Campbell was extremely pleased with how the prospect day went and is encouraged that it brought a lot of attention to the school and the men's lacrosse program. He looks forward to hosting another event next year.
